About Stop Killing Dogs Rescue
Barry glazer
and Gina Gargeu have been partners for over 13 years, in the
real estate firm century 21 downtown. They acquired the property
now housing The Downtown Dog Resort about 4 years ago and
started development not long after. The resort is part of a
master plan to assist in dog rescue and impact unnecessary
euthanasia throughout the country.
It is our belief that people have become numb to the horrible
atrocities committed against animals on a daily basis by our
government. Our society does not realize the extreme price we
pay by turning our backs and burying our heads in the sand when
it comes to this gross cruelty. We live by example. Our
legislature seems content to pass more severe cruelty to animals
laws as a response to the horrors that our children are
committing against helpless dogs and cats. Dog fights for
entertainment; burning cats and dogs for fun, are becoming every
day events. We see shootings and indiscriminate violence
occurring all the time to our friends and neighbors. We know
that people who have a history of violence to animals eventually
evolve into animals of violence towards people.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A WHOLE SOCIETY IS SETTING THE EXAMPLE?
We cannot hope to cure the horrors our children inflict on
animals and eventually people until we set by example, a caring
attitude to homeless animals. We hear that it is cost
prohibitive and that it can't be done. There are localities with
successful no-kill shelters that have worked with rescue groups
and others to save these poor helpless animals. How can our
politicians keep passing stronger and stronger cruelty laws and
continue to kill our dogs and cats relentlessly every day.
Hypocrisy has a price and we are paying it with our lives
everyday.
There is a natural bond that seems to occur almost
magically between the dog rescued from death and the aggrieved
humans contribution to the dog now saved. Each taking something away
from the relationship, each contributing what they can. There are
several degrees of involvement and the pace differs individually;
the interaction depends on what time and space the individual can
devote. The
Downtown Dog Resort is used for counseling and for
those that can't house dogs themselves for whatever reason.
The facility also
houses a veterinary hospital,
Swan Harbor Hospital. The chief
surgeon and head of operations is Dr. Marcella Bonner. Dr Bonner
opened the hospital in March of 2009 and has been the subject of
much controversy since. Dr Bonner is a dedicated believer in dog
rescue and works tirelessly with the rescues doing emergency
surgeries and spay and neuter services. Sensing the severe impact
the present financial crisis has had on dog health care, she has
sought to make SPAY, NEUTER, AND ESSENTIAL DOG CARE AFFORDABLE IN
THIS TIME OF FINANCIAL STRESS. She has advertised extensively
regarding her affordable dog care, which has drawn the ire of
veterinarians; believe it or not, throughout the country as well as
extreme hostility here in Baltimore. As a result of her advertising
on Craig's list and eBay, Veterinarians have condemned her on a
national web site utilized primarily by veterinarians. A well known
local veterinarian faxed a copy of her ad to veterinarians
throughout the city with the comment, “Would you refer to this
kennel?” The negative attention shown by these veterinarians
astonishes those of us who know Dr. Bonner and understand her strong
devotion to our cause and her love of animals.
Dr. Bonner has
several rescue animals on her farm and is committed to eliminating
the unnecessary mass slaughter that is taking place by our
government.
